The Art of the Heist: How Escape Artistry Built a Home in Wicker Park’s Creative Heart
If you walk into the Flatiron Arts Building at the intersection of North, Milwaukee, and Damen, you’ll feel a specific kind of energy. It’s the smell of oil paint, the sound of floorboards that have seen a century of footsteps, and the hum of artists at work. This was the birthplace of Escape Artistry, and there is no other place in Chicago where it could have started.
While many escape rooms across the country began with "off-the-shelf" kits and generic themes, Escape Artistry and the original creator, Maren Rosenberg wanted to do something different.
From the Gallery to the Game Room
Escape Artistry was founded on a simple, albeit ambitious, premise: Escape rooms are a new medium for art. It’s founder, a veteran of the Chicago theater and gallery scene, didn't see "puzzles" - she saw environmental storytelling. In the early days of 2014 and 2015, she wasn’t just the business owner; she was the "Maker." From scavenging antique shops in Bucktown, refurbishing vintage electronics, and hand-painting every square inch of the first rooms there was an insanely meticulous amount of detail that went into each escape game.
Escape Artistry first opened it’s doors in the historic Flatiron Arts Building because it represented the "Old Wicker Park" - a place where independent creators could build something from nothing. The idea wasn’t to just "lock" you in a room; rather transport you into a meticulously crafted Chicago story. Nowadays we have 5 fictional Chicago-themed games located at 1342 N. Milwaukee just down the road from the original location including “Roaring Dan’s Pirate Dungeon” and “Operation GRANIE”.
Hand-Crafted Chicago: “Roaring Dan’s Pirate Dungeon” and Beyond
Our current tie to the city isn't just in our name; it’s in the DNA of our games. We believe that an immersive experience should feel like it belongs specifically to its neighborhood.
The Time Gallery: As Escape Artistry grew, they expanded into their second location, "The Time Gallery" on Milwaukee Ave, allowing them to build even larger worlds while staying firmly rooted in the 606.
Roaring Dan’s Pirate Dungeon: We leaned into the maritime history of Lake Michigan, creating a space that feels like it was unearthed from beneath the city streets. Can you uncover the secrets entombed in his hideout and escape the dungeon before Lake Michigan’s icy tide comes in. Wouldn’t want to walk the plank, would yee, Agents?
A Pillar of the Wicker Park Community
In 2023, original owner Maren Rosenberg was looking for her next challenge when she opened the amazing space, Bookclub Chicago off Lincoln Ave. We had known Maren since we launched Lock Chicago back in 2015, and were excited to help her transition and continue to grow Escape Artistry through the local "Maker" culture instilled when she first started the company. We’ve always prided ourselves on being a truly independent Chicago small business and this was a great opportunity to continue the tradition.
Since Escape Artistry opened and we were lucky enough to take it over the team has consisted of actors, writers, painters, and engineers who live in the neighborhood. When you play a game at Escape Artistry, you are supporting the local arts ecosystem. We aren't a franchise; we are a collective of creators who believe that Chicago team building and nights out should be as imaginative as the city itself.
Unlocking the City
Wicker Park has always been a neighborhood of hidden doors and creative risks, and our games are just one piece of that puzzle. We want ChicagoEscapeRooms.com to highlight some of the amazing experiences throughout the city and be your compass for the best independent businesses in the area.
In our upcoming posts, we’ll be moving beyond the walls of the escape room to highlight the spots that make our Chicago community home. From some of the best post-game tacos at Antique Taco to post-game pints at The Standard Bar & Grill, we’re excited to share our favorite local hangs. Whether you’re a lifelong Chicagoan or just visiting for the weekend, stay tuned as we continue to map out the ultimate itineraries for explorers, thinkers, and adventurers.
The city is waiting. Are you ready to find the keys?
